US Stock Market Trading Hours

The stock market in any country pretty much operates during the same time; however, it is in their local time.

For example, in India, the stock market operates from 9:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. According to US Eastern Standard Time, it is between 11:45 p.m. and 6 a.m.

Indian investors who want to participate in the US Stock market have to trade as per the US time. The US Stock market is open from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. EST, which is from 7 p.m. – 1:30 a.m. in IST.

The US stock market is based on Eastern Time Zone (ET). Eastern Time has two variables, namely EST and EDT.

EST

It stands for Eastern Time Zone (EST) and is followed in New York, Washington DC, Florida and other US cities in the autumn and winter months. It is 5 hours behind the Coordinated Universal Time (UTC-5) or Greenwich Mean Time.

EDT

It stands for Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) and is followed in the summer and spring months in US cities. It is 4 hours behind the Coordinated Universal Time (UTC-4) or Greenwich Mean Time.

Here are the trading times for some of the largest global stock exchanges. All times represent regular trading hours, Monday-Friday, and are listed in Eastern time.

  • Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX): 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Mexico Stock Exchange (BMV): 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • London Stock Exchange (LSE): 3 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
  • Euronext Paris (EPA): 3 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
  • Frankfurt Stock Exchange (FRA): 3 a.m. to 11 a.m.
  • Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE): 8 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., 11:30 p.m. to 2 a.m.
