CogAT is an exam conducted in schools at the K-12 level to assess the mental ability level of the candidate. This exam does not involve memorising things but is based on the practical knowledge of the candidate. It is used to assess the candidate’s problem-solving skills through several questions in a time-bound manner. It has different levels as per the grade of the individual appearing for the exam. Each exam level has a different number of questions and time duration as well as difficulty.
Does CogAT test IQ?
As CogAT is a mental ability test, it appears as an IQ test. The purpose of an IQ test is to test an individual’s intelligence. An IQ test also checks your mathematical skillset, memory, language as well and logical reasoning however, CogAT aims to test similar parameters but has the main focus on the assessment of the critical thinking abilities of an individual.
These tests also help filter students who perform exceptionally well in calculative tasks and can answer questions of the curriculum even of higher grades. Moreover, CogAT also tests the psychological aspect of the candidate which is not in the case of a general IQ test.
Thus, IQ tests are different from CogAT tests due to this particular difference in their exam pattern.
