How to close SBI account online and offline?

State Bank of India is the leading government domestic bank in the country and provides various services like savings accounts, current accounts, demat accounts and credit cards across all Indian states and in almost all rural and semi-urban areas as well. However, SBI account users can not close an SBI account online. The person willing to close the account has to visit their home branch (the branch where the account was opened the first time) to close their account.

The steps to close an SBI account offline by visiting the home branch are :

  • Firstly, the account holder should check the Home branch where the account is opened.

  • After visiting the branch, the account holder can request an account closure form from the bank officials.

  • After receiving the account closure form, the user needs to fill in all the necessary details like account number, name of account holder(s) the amount in the bank account at the time of account closure, the reason for account closure, the address of the account holder and the mode of withdrawal of the amount (if any).

  • Along with the properly filled account closure form, the user needs to provide KYC details and documents like their Aadhaar Card, and PAN Card for proper address and name verification to the bank officials for initiating the account closure.

  • The account holder needs to surrender all the bank property, including debit card, chequebook and passbook of SBI along with the account closure form to proceed with the final account closure.

  • The account closure process at SBI is free of cost, however, if a user closes an SBI account between 14 days to one year, the bank charges an amount of Rs.500 plus GST from the individual.

Hence, by properly, following these steps, one easily close an SBI account by visiting their home branch and submitting all their documents to the bank officials.
